Description of Shop-Vac 9039800 Small Cartridge Filter
Ideal for dry pick up, the Shop-Vac cartridge filter fits a 5-gallon tank, and is specifically designed for the Hang Up wet/dry vacuum. Its high airflow keeps the debris inside the tank, while filtering the exhaust air. Customer Review: Not usually a "must have", but get it anyway

I use this filter with all my dry vacuuming. I use it with a filter bag for drywall and orbital sander dust. Otherwise, it would clog more easily than I have patience for. If it gets clogged when vacuuming coarser material, you can just take it out and knock/scrape the debris off. When I use only the foam sleeve, fine dust gets blown into the air and settles on the stuff in my garage.
Product descriptions on amazon.com can be a bit sparse sometimes, but it was fairly easy to find the filter I wanted because the product number matches the one on the ShopVac website. It would have given me some peace of mind if either amazon.com or ShopVac identified this filter as "Type AA", which one would assume was the model number based on its prominence on the packaging.
